OFF98: "Cannot Insert Object" Error Inserting Movie

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a file into your Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition program document, you may receive the following error message.

In Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition

Cannot insert object.

In Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition

The server application, source file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed.

In Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition

The server application, source file, or item can't be found. You should reinstall the server application.


CAUSE

You may receive the error message if both of the following are true:

  • You attempt to insert the movie through the Insert Object dialog box in Excel and PowerPoint, or the Object dialog box in Word.

    -and-


  • You click From File in this dialog box in Excel and Word, or you click Create From File in PowerPoint.



RESOLUTION

To insert a movie in your document, follow the steps for your program.

Microsoft Excel or Word

  1. On the Insert menu, click Movie.


  2. Locate and select the movie file.


  3. Click Open.


Microsoft PowerPoint

  1. On the Insert menu, point to Movies and Sounds, and then click Movie From File.


  2. Locate and select the movie file.


  3. Click Open.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
