To update your network installation of Office 98 with the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, follow these steps:

  1. Copy the folder that contains the network installation of Microsoft Office 98 to your local hard disk drive.


  2. Double-click Microsoft Office 98 Updater.


  3. In the dialog box that displays the Readme file for the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, click Continue.


  4. In the Microsoft Office 98 Updater dialog box, click Update.

    NOTE: If the Select Folder button is available, then Microsoft Office 98Updater has found more than one copy of Office 98 on your hard disk drive. To ensure that the correct copy of Office 98 is updated, follow these steps:

    1. Click Select Folder.


    2. The top of the Select File dialog box lists each copy of the Microsoft Office First Run file that was found. When you click an entry in the top of the Select File dialog box, the location of the file is displayed in the lower portion of the dialog box. Click the copy of Microsoft Office First Run that is located in the folder that you copied in Step 1, and then click OK.


    3. In the Microsoft Office 98 Updater dialog box, click Update.


    The appropriate files will be updated in the Microsoft Office 98 folder that you copied to your hard disk drive.


  5. In the dialog box that indicates that the update was successful, Click Continue.


  6. In the Microsoft Office First Run dialog box, click Quit.

    NOTE: If you click Update, the first run installation process will update the following files on your hard disk drive to the latest version:
    Microsoft Component Library
    Microsoft OLE Automation
    Microsoft OLE Library
    Microsoft Structured Storage


  7. Copy the Microsoft Office 98 folder back to your network server.


Once you have updated Office 98 on your network server, you must update the Office installation at each computer that is running Office from the network server. To update the necessary files on each computer that runs Office 98 programs from your network server, follow these steps:

  1. Move one of the following files from the System Folder:Extensions folder to the Trash:
    Microsoft Component Library
    Microsoft OLE Automation
    Microsoft OLE Library
    Microsoft Structured Storage


  2. Start an Office 98 program.


The first run installation process will be started, and the files listed in the previous step are updated.
