OFF98: "File not found" Error Running Office 98 Updater

  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, you may receive the following error message:

An error occurred that prevented the installation from completing.

File not found:Microsoft Office First Run


CAUSE

This problem may occur when one of the following conditions is true:

  • You are running the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition programs from a network server.

    -or-


  • You are running the Office 98 programs from the Office 98 compact disc.

    -or-


  • The Microsoft Office First Run file is missing from your hard disk drive.

    -or-


  • You are running a non-English version of Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition.



RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use the appropriate method.

Method 1: If You Are Running Office 98 from a Network Server

To update your network installation of Office 98 with the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, follow the steps described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Method 2: If You Are Running Office 98 from the Compact Disc

To update your Run From Compact Disc installation of Office 98 with the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, follow the steps described in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

Method 3: If Microsoft Office First Run Is Missing from Your Office Folder

If the Microsoft Office First Run file is missing from your Microsoft Office 98:Office folder, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Microsoft Office 98 CD into your CD-ROM drive.


  2. Open the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder on the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition CD.


  3. Drag the Microsoft Office First Run file to the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder on your hard disk drive.


You can now run the Microsoft Office 98 Updater without receiving the error message described in the Symptoms section of this article.
