The following are the currently known issues that may occur when you run the Microsoft Office 98 Updater.

"File not found" Error

When you run the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, you may receive the following error message:
An error occurred that prevented the installation from completing.
File not found:Microsoft Office First Run
This problem may occur when one of the following conditions is true:

  • You are running the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition programs from a network server.

    -or-


  • You are running the Microsoft Office 98 programs from the Office 98 compact disc (CD).

    -or-


  • The Microsoft Office First Run file is missing from your hard disk drive.

    -or-


  • You are running a non-English version of Microsoft Office 98.

PowerPoint Not Updated

After running the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, the version of Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition may be unchanged.

If you have renamed the Microsoft PowerPoint icon in the Microsoft Office 98 folder to something other than "Microsoft PowerPoint," the Microsoft Office 98 Updater may not update Microsoft PowerPoint.

To update Microsoft PowerPoint using the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, do the following:

  1. Rename the Microsoft PowerPoint icon in the Microsoft Office 98 folder on your hard disk drive to "Microsoft PowerPoint", without quotation marks.


  2. Re-run the Microsoft Office 98 Updater.

Computer Is Restarted After Running Updater

After clicking Quit in the last dialog box of the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, your computer may restart.

Your computer will restart after running the Updater if you have any of the following programs running when you start the Updater:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer


  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition


  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition


  • Microsoft PowerPoint 98 Macintosh Edition


Because these programs are running, some of the files that are updated are currently in use and cannot be used until the programs are shut down and your computer is restarted.

If you do not want to have your computer restarted after running the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, make sure that none of the programs listed are running when you start the Updater.

How to Interpret the MS Office 98 Updater Log File

When you run the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, a log file is created on the root of your hard disk drive that contains the blessed System folder. The name of this log file is "MS Office 98 Updater Log" and is a text file that can be read using any text editor like SimpleText or Microsoft Word.

The log file will show the following items that were successfully updated:

  • Microsoft Office First Run


  • Visual Basic for Applications


  • Microsoft PowerPoint


  • PP Translator 8-4


It will not list items that were not updated. For example, if you do not have Microsoft PowerPoint installed, the entry in the log file for Microsoft PowerPoint will be omitted.

NOTE: Even though you may have other files updated (in your System Folder), these files are not entered into the log file because they are copied to your hard disk drive by the Microsoft Office first run installation process.
