OFF98: Office CD not Mounting on DVD Drive

ID: Q190468

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you insert your Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition CD into a DVD drive, the compact disc icon may not appear on your desktop.

CAUSE

Your Office 98 CD-ROM icon may not appear on your desktop if the following conditions are true:

  • You are using a DVD drive.

    -and-

  • You do not have the correct extensions installed or enabled.

    -or-

  • You started your computer with a bootable CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive.

RESOLUTION

Missing or Disabled Extensions

In order for your Office 98 CD-ROM icon to appear on your desktop, enable the following extensions through the Extensions Manager:

      Extension Computer Model
      ----------------------------------------------------------------

Apple CD/DVD Drive PowerBook G3 Series
UDF Volume Access PowerBook G3 and PowerBook G3 Series

CoolDVD Drive Extensions

If these extensions are not available in the Extensions Manager user interface, they may not be installed on your computer. Please see your Software documentation for directions on how to install these extensions.

Starting Up with Bootable CD-ROM in the CD-ROM Drive

If you start your computer with a bootable CD-ROM in the DVD drive, but the DVD drive is not the boot drive, you may not be able to mount discs on the DVD drive. To resolve this issue, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the bootable CD-ROM disc from the CD-ROM drive.

  2. Restart your computer.

NOTE: If the previous steps do not resolve your issue, you should try to mount a CD-ROM disc other than the Office 98 compact disc to verify that your DVD drive is working.

MORE INFORMATION

The table listed in the "Cause" section of this article mentions two computers that are very similar in name: PowerBook G3 and PowerBook G3 Series. These computers are not the same computers and can be identified through differences in the Apple logo on the display case. A PowerBook G3 computer has a small, six-color Apple logo on the display case, and a PowerBook G3 Series computer has a large Apple logo on the display case that is not six- colored.
