OFF98: Error Starting Word or Excel When Outlook 8.1 is Installed

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition you receive the following error message

Unexpected critical error:can't start program
and Word does not start.

When you try to start Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition you receive the following error message:
One of your object libraries (Standard OLE Types(PowerMac)) is missing or damaged. Please install the program again.


CAUSE

This problem will occur when the following conditions are true:

  • You have installed Microsoft Outlook for Macintosh, Exchange Server Edition, version 8.1.


  • -and-

  • You performed a drag-and-drop installation of Microsoft Office 98.


RESOLUTION

To resolve the problem, follow these steps:

  1. Move the following file to the Trash:

    System Folder:Extensions:Microsoft OLE Automation


  2. Start Word.


  3. Enter the appropriate information when you are prompted for your name and organization, and then click OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
