ID: Q243943

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition, on platform(s):
    • Apple Macintosh System Software 9.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Office Manager (MOM) to start or switch to a program, the following error message appears:

Could not save changes, the Preferences file has been moved or deleted. Restart the computer to correct the problem.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:

  • You are running version 9.0 of the Macintosh System Software (MacOS).
  • Your computer has been set up to use multiple user accounts.
  • Your account is a limited user account.
NOTE: The above error message appears even if you have sufficient privileges to run the program.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you can use the aliases under Recent Applications on the Apple menu. If you do not see an alias for one of the Office programs, start the program from the Microsoft Office 98 folder on your hard disk. After you have done this, the Mac OS automatically creates an alias to the program under Recent Applications.
