OFF98: Clicking Office Program in Items Panel Does Not Start the Program

SYMPTOMS
When you click to start an Office 98 program in your Items panel, your screen flashes, but the program does not start.
CAUSE
This problem may occur when the following conditions are true:
- You are running version 9.0 of the Macintosh System Software (MacOS).
-and-
- Your computer has been set up to use multiple user accounts.
-and-
- Your account is a Panels user account.
-and-
- You have multiple versions of the Office program that you cannot start on your computer.
-and-
- The correct version of the Office 98 program is not listed in the User Applications list box on the Applications tab of the Edit "<Username>" dialog box.
NOTE: You cannot determine whether the correct version of the Office program is listed in this list box. This is because the path to the application is not listed.
RESOLUTION
Follow these steps to resolve the problem:
- Log on as the owner or a user who has permission to manage user accounts.
- Open the Multiple Users control panel.
- Click to select the user with the Panels user account, and then click Open.
- Click the arrow next to Show Setup Details to display the four tabs for setting up the account.
- Activate the Applications tab. Clear the check boxes for the following programs:
- Microsoft Excel
- Microsoft Word
- Microsoft PowerPoint
- Click Add Other.
- Browse to the Microsoft Office 98 folder on your hard disk. Click to select the Office 98 program that you want to grant the user permission to run, and then click Open.
Repeat Steps 6-7 for any other Office programs that you want to grant the user permission to run.
- Close the Edit "<username>" window.
- Close the Multiple Users control panel.
- On the Special menu, click Logout.
- Log on as the Panels user.
