OFF98: Restricted Users Can See Files in Find File That They Do Not Have Access To

ID: Q244109

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition, used with:
    • Mac OS 9

SYMPTOMS

If you have Multiple Users enabled, when you perform a search in the Find File dialog box, you may temporarily see files to which you do not have access in the Listed files box.

CAUSE

The Mac OS does not necessarily hide files to which you do not have access. It just denies read/write access.

MORE INFORMATION

Mac OS 9 has a new feature called Multiple Users that allows you to create users with restricted access to the computer. For the most part, users are restricted to their Documents folder, which is located in the <hard drive name>:Users:<user name> folder. Please see the Mac OS 9 Help documentation for more information.
