Office: MOM 4.2 Upgrade Overwrites Office 4.0 SETUP.STF

ID: Q113433

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.2
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you install the contents of the Microsoft Office Manager 4.2 Upgrade disk to an existing MSOFFICE directory that contains a Standard or Professional installation of Office 4.x, this version of MOM overwrites the SETUP.STF file to include only the new MOM 4.2 installation information.

After you install MOM 4.2 to this subdirectory, you are no longer able to uninstall the Office 4.0 applications. In addition, the new SETUP.STF causes problems upgrading Microsoft Word for Windows 6.0 with the 6.0a patch.

WORKAROUND

To correct this situation, do the following:

  1. Rename the SETUP.STF file.

  2. Reinstall Office 4.0 to rebuild the SETUP.STF file. This will go quickly because all elements are already installed and will be detected by the Setup program.

  3. Uninstall MOM 4.0 through the Office 4.0 Setup. (This step is optional.)

  4. Install MOM 4.2 to a different subdirectory (for example OFFICE42 or MSOFFICE\MOM42).

MORE INFORMATION

The Office 4.0 directory is the default location as specified by the 4.2 standalone Setup application.
