Error Occurs Activating Link to Lotus Freelance Object

ID: Q116268

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.2
  • Microsoft Word for Windows, versions 6.0, 6.0a
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Access 2.0
  • Microsoft Windows operating system versions 3.1, 3.11

SYMPTOMS

The following error message may occur when you activate a Lotus Freelance version 2.01 linked object from Word for Windows, Microsoft Excel, or Microsoft Access:

Unable to obtain a reservation for the file. Open as read only?
This error does not occur if you activate the Lotus Freelance link from Windows Write or from Microsoft PowerPoint 4.0.

CAUSE

The error occurs if the Lotus Freelance slide contains a chart or symbol. If you choose Yes in the error dialog box, the Lotus Freelance file is opened as read-only. You cannot save this file using the same filename, but you can save it using another filename, which updates the link to use the newly saved file.

If you choose No in the error dialog box, the Lotus Freelance linked object does not open. Furthermore, you can no longer start Lotus Freelance during the current Windows session. When you try to start the application, the following error message occurs:

Cannot start more than one copy of Freelance for Windows.
You must exit and then restart Windows before you can start Lotus Freelance.
