No Prompt for Spelling Dictionary Language During Setup

ID: Q117547

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Office Setup program, and you install the Spelling Checker (Tools installation option) you do not receive a Dictionary Options dialog box with a message asking if you want to install the U.S. English dictionary.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design in Microsoft Office.

When you install Microsoft PowerPoint version 4.0, and you choose to install the Spell Checker, you receive a dialog box with the following message:

Would you like to install the U.S. English dictionary? If you choose not
to, the British English dictionary will be installed.

If you choose Yes, the U.S. English dictionary file, MSSP_AM.LEX is copied to the MSAPPS\PROOF subdirectory of your Windows directory. If you choose No, the British English dictionary file, MSSP_BR.LEX is copied to the MSAPPS\PROOF subdirectory of your Windows directory.

The spelling dictionary file that installed with Microsoft Office, MSSP2_EN.LEX, is used for both the U.S. English and British English versions of the Spelling Checker. Therefore, only one file is necessary, and you do not need to choose which dictionary file to install. The following lines are written to the [MS Proofing Tools] section in the WIN.INI file when you install the Spelling Checker using the Microsoft Office Setup:

   Spelling 1033,0=C:\WIN31\MSAPPS\PROOF\MSSPEL2.DLL,
      C:\WIN31\MSAPPS\PROOF\MSSP2_EN.LEX
   Spelling 2057,0=C:\WIN31\MSAPPS\PROOF\MSSPEL2.DLL,
      C:\WIN31\MSAPPS\PROOF\MSSP2_EN.LEX
