MOM: Can't Prevent Customization of MOM Toolbar or Menus

ID: Q119406

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for Windows, versions 4.0, 4.2, 4.3

SUMMARY

There is no method to keep users from customizing Microsoft Office Manager (MOM).

WORKAROUND

If you need to prevent users from making permanent changes to the configuration of the MOM toolbar, do the following in Microsoft Windows or Microsoft Windows for Workgroups, versions 3.1 and 3.11:

  1. Set the MOM toolbar in the proper configuration (buttons showing or not showing, menu items, and so on).

  2. Close the MOM application by selecting the Microsoft Office button, usually located at the right-hand side of the MOM toolbar. Choose Exit from the menu that appears.

  3. Start File Manager.

  4. In File Manager, switch to the Windows directory. Locate and select the MSOFFICE.INI file.

  5. From the File menu, choose Properties.

  6. Select (place an "x" in) the Read Only check box.

  7. Choose OK to accept the change.

As long as the MSOFFICE.INI file is read-only, changes made in MOM will be retained only while the MOM application remains running. If you close and restart MOM, the changes will be lost.

Note that there is no method to prevent changes being made to MOM: you can prevent permanent changes only.
