Office Setup and Uninstall Command Unavailable

ID: Q119798

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for Windows, versions 4.2, 4.2-CD, 4.3, 4.3-CD

SUMMARY

When you choose the Microsoft Office button on the Microsoft Office Manager (MOM) toolbar, the Office Setup And Uninstall command on the Microsoft Office menu is unavailable.

Additionally, the Office Setup icon is not located in the Microsoft Office program group.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs if you have installed Microsoft Office using one of the following installation options:

  • Workstation

  • Laptop (Minimum)

  • Custom/Complete (if the Tools option is not selected)

  • Run From CD

This behavior is by design of Microsoft Office. The Setup program, SETUP.EXE, is only installed when you choose the Typical Installation option, or the Custom/Complete Installation, and you select the Tools option.

WORKAROUND

To restore the Setup And Uninstall command to the Microsoft Office menu, do either of the following:

  • Run the Setup program again and install the Setup Files option by using the following steps:

    1. Run the Setup program from the original location; the Microsoft Office Setup disk 1, Microsoft Office CD, or Network server.

    2. Choose Add/Remove from the Microsoft Office Setup dialog box.

    3. In the Maintenance Installation dialog box, select the Tools option.

NOTE: If you do not want to install all of the other Tools options, (Spelling Checker, MS Info, or TrueType Fonts) choose the Change button, and clear any of the options you do not want to install.

You can run Setup from the Office Setup icon or from the Office Setup And Uninstall command on the Microsoft Office Manager toolbar menu.

    -or-

  • If you installed Microsoft Office from a network server, or CD, you can create a new menu item on the Microsoft Office menu that will run Setup from the server or the CD. To use this method, do the following:

    1. From the Microsoft Office menu, choose Customize.

    2. Select the Menu tab. Clear the Office Setup And Uninstall check box. Choose the Add button.

    3. In the Description box, type "Office Setup and Uninstall" (without the quotation marks) or any other description that you want to appear on the Microsoft Office menu.

    4. In the Command Line box, type the name of the Setup file, including the path and extension (see below for command line syntax).

If all defaults were chosen during the installation, use the appropriate command line below for the command line.

      • If you chose Workstation, Laptop (Minimum), or Custom/Complete
        L:\MSOFFICE\SETUP.EXE /T C:\MSOFFICE\SETUP\SETUP.STF

      • If you chose Run From CD
        D:\SETUP.EXE /T C:\MSOFFICE\SETUP\SETUP.STF

where L:\MSOFFICE is the path to the Microsoft Office network server installation, D:\ is your CD-ROM drive, and the path following the /T switch is the path to the SETUP.STF file.

    5. In the Customize dialog box, choose OK.
