Office CD ROM: Serial Number Changes with Each Install

ID: Q123149

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for Windows, version 4.2-CD
  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0-CD
  • Microsoft Office 97 for Windows

SUMMARY

When you install Microsoft Office from a CD-ROM, it generates a new serial number each time an installation is performed.

MORE INFORMATION

Because it is Read Only, the CD-ROM version cannot be serialized. Instead, it generates a random number to display in the licensing screen each time you run the Setup program. This may cause confusion if you install more than once, particularly if you have already sent in your registration with the original number. Ideally, you should make a note of your registration number when you first install Microsoft Office and keep it for tracking purposes.
