Setup Err Msg: Cannot Replace Folder with File

ID: Q124768

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for the Macintosh, version 4.2
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, version 5.0
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 6.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SYMPTOMS

When you install Office for the Macintosh, the following Setup error message may be displayed:

A non-empty directory, with the same name as the following destination file, exists in the destination directory.

<PATH>:Microsoft Office:Microsoft Excel 5:Microsoft Excel
After you cancel the above error message, the following Microsoft Office 4.2 Setup error message appears:
Microsoft Office 4.2 Setup was not completed successfully

CAUSE

These errors occur when a folder with the same name as a file, which Setup is trying to install, exists in the location where you are installing Office.

This commonly occurs when the folder in which you want to install an application, such as Microsoft Excel, already contains a non-empty folder named "Microsoft Excel." By design, Setup prevents you from replacing this folder with the new Microsoft Office program file.

RESOLUTION

To correct this problem, exit Office Setup and locate the folder with the name that is the same as the file that Setup is trying to install. Either rename or move the folder.
