Office: Behavior When Creating New or Opening Existing Binder

ID: Q132121

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office Binder for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Office Binder 97

SUMMARY

The behavior that occurs when you create a new binder or open an existing binder depends on the item that you click in the New Binder dialog box and whether or not there is a file open in the active Office Binder window. Note that by design of Microsoft Office Binder, you can only open one binder document in a single instance of Office Binder.

MORE INFORMATION

Creating a New Binder Based on a Template

When you start Microsoft Office Binder, a new blank binder is opened, named Binder<n>, where <n> is a number that indicates how many new blank binders are currently open. If you then create a new binder based on a Binder Template, a new Binder window reflecting the contents of the template appears in the current instance of Office Binder, replacing the current Binder window. A new instance of Office Binder is not started.

If you create a new binder based on a Binder Template, while the current instance of Office Binder contains a saved or modified binder file, the new binder is opened in a new instance of Office Binder.

Creating a New Blank Binder

If you create a new blank binder by clicking the Blank Binder item in the New Binder dialog box, a new instance of Office Binder is started, even if the current instance contains a blank, unsaved binder.

Opening an Existing Binder

When you open an existing binder, if the current instance of Office Binder contains a blank, unsaved binder, the existing binder is opened in the current instance of Office Binder; no new instance is started.

If the current instance of Office Binder contains a saved or modified binder, the existing binder is opened in a new instance of Office Binder.

Opening or Creating a New Binder Using Office Shortcut Bar

When you open an existing binder (Open A Document or Open Office Document button on Office toolbar) or create a new Binder (Create A New Document or New Office Document button on Office toolbar) from the Office Shortcut Bar, a new instance of Office Binder is always started.

To close a binder, you must close the Microsoft Office Binder instance as well, and vice versa. That is, when you click Close on the File menu in Office Binder, both the binder file and Office Binder are closed.
