OFF95: New Dialog Box Doesn't Appear in Application

ID: Q135097

  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Access 7.0

SYMPTOMS

When you click New on the File menu in your Microsoft application, a new document may be created without displaying the New dialog box or you may receive an error message.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you remove the application that created the Templates folder in the Microsoft Office folder for the template files. For example, if you install Microsoft Office without Microsoft Excel, and you later install the Microsoft Excel standalone application, if you run the Microsoft Office Setup program in maintenance mode and click Remove All, the New dialog box no longer appears in Microsoft Excel when you click New on the File menu.

This problem occurs because when you remove the Microsoft application that created the Templates folder, the Setup program removes the Templates information from the Windows registry file. Note that the Setup program only removes the individual template folders in the Templates folder for the application that you are removing. That is, the template folders for the application that still uses the Templates folder still remain on your computer. However, the New dialog box no longer appears in your application because the Templates file information in the registry file has been removed.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, you must reinstall the application that no longer displays the New dialog box.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
