OFF4: Unimplemented Trap When Working with OLE Applications

ID: Q138637

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for the Macintosh, versions 4.2, 4.2.1, 4.2.1a
  • Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, versions 6.0, 6.0.1
  • Microsoft Excel for the Macintosh, versions 5.0, 5.0a
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Macintosh, version 4.0
  • Microsoft Graph 5.0
    on the following platforms: MACINTOSH
  • Microsoft ClipArt Gallery, version 1.1

SYMPTOMS

In PowerPoint, when you try to insert ClipArt or start Graph 5.0, you may receive an error message similar to the following:

Sorry, an unimplemented Trap in <application name>
If you run System 7.5 or later, the Microsoft OLE Extension will no longer appear in the extensions list in Extensions Manager.

CAUSE

The Microsoft OLE Extension has become corrupted, and Extensions Manager does not recognize the extension. In some cases, the size of the extension may be over 1.8 MB. Most likely this is not a problem with Extensions Manager.

RESOLUTION

You can correct this problem by deleting the Microsoft OLE Extension, Microsoft OLE Library, Shared Code folder, and the Shared Code Manager (if the Shared Code Manager is also not visible from Extensions Manager)--these are all in the Extensions folder--and then reinstalling PowerPoint.

If you have other computers running Office with no problems, you can copy these files from that machine to the troubled machine.

To be thorough, you should delete all the OLE components and reinstall them. To do this:

  1. Go to the Extensions folder in the System Folder.

  2. Drag the following items to the trash:
    Microsoft OLE Extension
    Microsoft OLE Library
    Microsoft Dialog Library
    Shared Code (Folder)
    Shared Code Manager

  3. Run Microsoft Office Setup (located in the Microsoft Office folder) or Microsoft PowerPoint Setup (located in the PowerPoint:Setup folder).

  4. Click Add/Remove.

  5. Under Installed Components, click the option triangle for Microsoft PowerPoint.

  6. All options are selected by default. Leave the Microsoft PowerPoint option on the second level selected. Click the other options to clear the check boxes (that is, remove the X's).

  7. Under Installed Components, click the option triangle for Tools.

  8. Leave the Spelling option selected. Click the other options to clear them.

  9. Click Continue and then click OK.

  10. When the removal is finished, go to the Preferences folder in the System Folder and drag the PowerPoint Setting (4) file to the desktop.

  11. Run Microsoft Office Setup again and click Add/Remove.

  12. Under Components Not Yet Installed, click the following two items to select them:
    Microsoft PowerPoint
    Tools

  13. Click Continue.

After the install is complete, PowerPoint should work as expected.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Most likely you will notice the Unimplemented Trap error message when the server application calls the Microsoft OLE Extension. For example, Graph 5.0 calls the OLE Extension at launch time. However, ClipArt Gallery does not call the Microsoft OLE Extension until you double-click a thumbnail.
