OFF95: File Name Not Valid/Inaccessible, Using Advanced Find

ID: Q141362

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Access 7.0
  • Microsoft Binder, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use Advanced Find in the Open dialog box to find a file, one of the following messages appears

  • You do not have access to the folder, <folder name>.

  • The folder '<folder name>' isn't accessible. It may be on an unavailable volume, or protected with a password.

  • The file name, specification or location '<folder name>' is not valid. Check your typing.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Advanced Find command in the Microsoft Windows 95 Open dialog box fails to recognize nonphysical locations, including the My Computer, Network Neighborhood, and Entire Network locations.

The message that appears is determined by the method that you use to specify the file location. For example, if you click Open a Document on the Office Shortcut Bar, click the Advanced button, and type "My Computer" (without the quotation marks), the second message appears if a physical location is selected in the Look In box in the Open dialog box. A different message will appear if a nonphysical location is selected in the Open dialog box.

MORE INFORMATION

A nonphysical location is a location that does not exist as a folder on your hard disk.

The problem can also occur in the Advanced Find dialog box when:

  • You use the Picture command on the Insert menu in Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, or Microsoft PowerPoint.

  • You use the File command on the Insert menu in Microsoft Word.

  • You use the Movie or Sound command on the Insert menu in Microsoft PowerPoint.

  • You use the Add From File command on the Section menu in Microsoft Binder.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this behavior to be by design of Microsoft Windows 95.
