ORK: UNC Naming Conventions Cannot Be Used in NIW Open Dialog

ID: Q142980

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Access 7.0
  • Microsoft Excel for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft PowerPoint for Windows 95, version 7.0
  • Microsoft Word for Windows 95, version 7.0

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Network Installation Wizard and use a universal naming convention (UNC) path to select the location of the .stf file, the application may select the local drive instead.

CAUSE

The local drive may be selected if you type a UNC name under File Name in the "Please choose the proper STF File" dialog box. This is because the Microsoft Network Installation Wizard is designed to access a network location only by the drive Mapping function provided.

RESOLUTION

To select an .stf file on the network using the current version of the Network Installation Wizard, select the Network button in the "Please choose the proper STF file" dialog box, enter the location of the .stf file in the "Map Network Drive" dialog box, and then click OK. This returns you to the "Please choose the proper STF file" dialog box at the proper network location. Select the desired .stf file in the "File Name" box, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft Network Installation Wizard. This problem has been corrected in Network Installation Wizard, version 1.1 and later.
