  • Microsoft Office for the Macintosh, versions 4.2.1a, 4.2.1bCD

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the online manuals for Microsoft Office on CD, you may receive the following error message

The file "Microsoft Word Documentation" cannot be opened or couldn't be found because of error # -43
and your only option is to click OK.

CAUSE

You may receive this error message if you try to gain access to the Character Sets in Appendix A of the Microsoft Word User's Guide in the online documentation of the Office CD.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

The online documentation that ships with Microsoft Office for the Macintosh version 4.2.1a and 4.2.1b on CD contains the same manuals that ship with these versions of Office on floppy disk. In the Microsoft Word User's Guide, Appendix A (Character Sets), there are tables that contain the 255 character set for the Times New Roman and Symbol fonts for Microsoft Windows and the Times, Symbol, and Chicago font for the Macintosh. This is the character set on which the jump in the online documentation is unsuccessful.
