SUMMARY

It is possible to check the amount of memory a program is using within its memory heap. The memory heap can be thought of as the amount of memory reserved for use by a certain program (normally the value shown in the Preferred Size box in the Get Info window for a program). However, programs do not necessarily use all of the memory allotted to them. For instance, a program may have 4000 KB allocated to it, but may only be using 300 of the 4000 KB.

MORE INFORMATION

The following steps illustrate how to check the amount of memory a program is using within its memory heap.

NOTE: These steps will work only on Macintosh computers with System 7.x and the Finder Help extension installed.

  1. With the program running, click the Program menu in the upper-right corner of the screen, and click Finder.

  2. On the Apple menu, click About This Macintosh (about this Computer).

There will be a listing for each currently loaded program as well as for the System Software. To the right of the program name, there is a bar that represents the amount of memory allocated to the program. The dark part of the bar shows how much memory is currently used, while the lighter part shows how much memory is still available to the program.

  3. On the Help menu, click Show Balloons.

  4. Move the insertion point over the program's memory bar.

A balloon should appear that will display a message similar to the following:
This program is currently using xxxK out of the xxxK reserved for it.
