OFF: Program Window Moves Toward Office Shortcut Bar

SYMPTOMS

When you start a program you may notice that the program window moves closer to the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar (OSB) each time it is opened. The program window may eventually move off the screen. The following applications are known to exhibit this behavior:

Microsoft Word 97
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01
Task Manager on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0


CAUSE

You may experience this problem when the following conditions are true:

  • The program window is not maximized.

    -and-


  • The Office Shortcut Bar is docked at the top or on the left side of the screen.

    -and-


  • The program is opened and closed multiple times in the same session of Windows.


You may notice that the movement of the program window increases if any of the following conditions are true:

  • The Always On Top option is enabled for the Office Shortcut Bar.

    -or-


  • The Auto Hide option is disabled for the Office Shortcut Bar.

    -or-


  • The "Auto fit into the title bar area" is disabled for the Office Shortcut Bar.



WORKAROUND

To minimize this behavior, try any of the following:

  • Dock the Office Shortcut bar at the bottom or on the right side of the screen.


  • Enable the Auto Hide option for the Office Shortcut Bar.


  • Enable the "Auto fit into the title bar area" option for the Office Shortcut Bar.


  • Disable the Always On Top option for the Office Shortcut Bar.


NOTE: To change any of the settings for the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar(OSB),use the following procedure:

  1. Right-click the OSB and click Customize.


  2. Click the View tab and make the desired changes and then click OK.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
