OFF98: Remove Office 98 Version 1.1 Cannot Locate Microsoft Office 98

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Remove Office 98 v1.1 program, you may receive the following error message:

Could not locate any copies of Microsoft Office 98 on this volume.
Then, the following message appears
The remove was successful. You should quit, empty the Trash, and install the most recent release of Microsoft Office 98 now.
and Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition is not removed from your computer.


CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:

  • The Microsoft Office 98 file is located in a folder in the System Folder. The Microsoft Office 98 file is normally stored in the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder. If you move this file to a subfolder in the System Folder, such as the Extensions folder, the problem described in this article occurs.


    • -or-

  • You have deleted the Microsoft Office 98 file from your computer.



WORKAROUND

Method 1 - Use the Office Custom Installer to Remove Office

To work around the problem, use the Microsoft Office Installer, which is located in the Office Custom Install folder on the Microsoft Office compact disc (CD), to remove Office 98 from your computer.

Method 2 - Drag a Copy of the Microsoft Office 98 File to the Hard Disk

To work around the problem, follow these steps:

  1. Insert the Office 98 CD into your CD-ROM drive.

    NOTE: If you have installed Office 98 from a network volume, connect to that network volume.


  2. Drag the Microsoft Office 98 file from the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder on the Office 98 CD to the Microsoft Office 98:Office folder on your hard disk.


  3. Open the folder that contains the Remove Office 98 v1.1 program.


  4. Double-click Remove Office 98 v1.1.


The Remove Office 98 v1.1 program removes Office 98 from your computer.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
