OFF98: Extra Files Are Installed After Custom Office Install

ID: Q185042

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

After you perform a custom installation of Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition, files that are associated with components that you have not selected for installation may be placed in the <hard disk>:System Folder:Preferences folder. Specifically, these files are the following:

Excel Chart Gallery (8)
Graph Chart Gallery (8)

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you run the Microsoft Office Installer program and perform a custom installation of Microsoft Office 98, and you do not install Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Graph.

If you choose to install Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Graph, these files are normally installed in the <hard disk>:System Folder:Preferences folder.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, drag these two files to the Trash.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition.

MORE INFORMATION

If you performed a drag-and-drop installation of Microsoft Office 98, these files are also installed in the Preferences folder when you start an Office program for the first time. In this case, this is expected behavior.
