The Microsoft Office Manager is included in the Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition Value Pack. To install the Microsoft Office Manager (also called "MOM"), run the Value Pack Installer in the Value Pack folder on the Microsoft Office 98 compact disc, click Microsoft Office Manager, and then click Install. After you restart the computer, the Microsoft Office Manager menu appears in the upper-right corner of the screen next to the application menu.

Using Quit Finder to Rebuild the Desktop

You can use the Quit Finder menu item to quickly rebuild your computer's desktop without actually restarting the computer. To do this, follow these steps:

Quit all running programs.

Hold down the OPTION key. Point to the Microsoft Office Manager menu and click Quit Finder.

As soon as you click Quit Finder, release the OPTION key. Then, quickly press and hold down the COMMAND key and the OPTION key, in that order.

When you receive the following alert message

Are you sure you want to rebuild the desktop file on the disk "<hard disk name>"?

release the COMMAND and OPTION keys, and then click OK.

The Finder rebuilds your desktop. After rebuilding is complete, the Finder starts, and you can continue using your computer.

Problems Using Quit Finder When Other Programs Are Running

There are a few known problems that may occur when you click Quit Finder on the MOM menu and other programs are running. These problem as listed as follows:

If you click the application menu, Finder is not listed.

If you click the Apple menu, only the "About <Program>" menu item appears.

If you click Customize on the Microsoft Office Manager menu, you receive the following error message:

This cannot be opened while the Finder is not running.

To correct these problems, click Finder on the MOM menu. Or, quit all running programs; when you do this, Finder is restarted, and you can continue using your computer.

Note that there may be other problems that are associated with clicking Quit Finder when other programs are running; so, use Quit Finder only when no other programs are running.
