WD98: Cannot Modify File Location Settings

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to change a File Locations preference setting (on the Tools menu, click Preferences, and then click the File Locations tab) the changes you made do not take effect and you receive no error or you receive the following error:

The setting could not be created.


CAUSE

The Microsoft Office Settings(8) or Word Settings(8) preference file may be locked.


RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, unlock the preference files by following these steps:

  1. In the Finder, open the Macintosh HD:System Folder:Preferences folder.


  2. Find the following preference files:
    Microsoft Office Settings (8)
    Word Settings (8)


  3. Select one of the settings files and then click Get Info on the File menu.


  4. Click to clear the Locked check box.


  5. Close the Info panel.


  6. Repeat steps 3 through 6 to unlock the other settings file.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
