OFF98: Office Assistant Search Fails on Foreign Language Strings

ID: Q187590

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Office Assistant to search for a Help topic, you may receive the following response from the Office Assistant:

I don't know what you mean. Please rephrase your question.
You may receive this response even though the text that you entered for the search is a valid search item.

CAUSE

You may experience this behavior if both of the following are true:

  • You have an Apple Language Kit installed on your computer.

  • -and-

  • You have your keyboard set to a language other than U.S.

The Office Help files are written in English; therefore, your search text must be in English.

NOTE: This article is intended for users of the U.S. English version of Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition. If you are using a localized version of Office 98, for example, German, then the Office Assistant will successfully perform a search in that localized language.

WORKAROUND

To successfully perform a search with the Office Assistant, change the language of your keyboard to U.S. To do this, click U.S. on the Keyboard menu.

STATUS

This is by design of the programs included with Microsoft Office 98 Macintosh Edition.
