SYMPTOMS

When you perform a search in the Search (Office Find File) dialog box, your search results may return no files, even though your search criteria should return some files.

CAUSE

If you are searching an HFS+ drive or partition, your search may note return any files. The Office Find File program in Microsoft Office 4.2.x is unable to perform a search on drives formatted as HFS+.

WORKAROUND

If you want to search a drive formatted as HFS+, use the Find File utility in the Finder. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In any Office program, click Finder on the Application menu.

  2. On the File menu, click Find.

  3. Enter your search criteria in the Find File dialog box, and click Find.

MORE INFORMATION

The HFS+ format, also known as HFS Extended format, is a new feature in Mac OS 8.1. To determine whether your hard disk or partition is formatted using the HFS+ format, do the following:

  1. On the Apple menu, click Apple System Profiler.

  2. On the Select menu, click Volume Information.

  3. In the list of Volumes, select the drive or partition in question.

If the drive/partition is formatted as HFS+, the text next to Kind displays "Hard Disk, HFS+".
