OFF98: Computer Restarts After Running Office 98 Updater

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, you may receive the following message after you click Install in the Microsoft Office First Run dialog box:

Microsoft Office needs to copy files to your system folder before it can launch for the first time. Click continue to copy files and restart your computer. Click cancel to exit without running your Office application.
If you click Continue, the first run installation process copies files to your System Folder. Then, when you click Quit to the alert that the installation was successful, your computer restarts. If you click Cancel to the warning above, the Microsoft Office First Run dialog box is redisplayed.


CAUSE

When you start the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, you may receive the warning described in the Symptoms section of this article if you have any of the following programs running:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer


  • -or-

  • Microsoft Excel 98 Macintosh Edition


  • -or-

  • Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition


  • -or-

  • Microsoft PowerPoint Macintosh Edition


While these programs are running, some of the files that the Microsoft Office 98 Updater will update are in use and cannot be updated until you quit the programs and restart your computer.


RESOLUTION

If you do not want to have your computer restarted after running the Microsoft Office 98 Updater, make sure none of the programs listed in the Cause section of this article are running.
