SUMMARY

Microsoft has identified a number of year 2000 related problems in the programs listed at the beginning of this article.

To address these problems, Microsoft has released a Year 2000 Update for Microsoft Office 95. This update includes updated files to correct year 2000 related issues in Office.

This article explains how to obtain and install the Year 2000 Update. It also includes a history of the update and a brief description of the problems it corrects.

NOTE: This patch is designed for Microsoft Office for Windows 95, version 7.0 (Office 95) products only. If you don't have Office 95, then for more information about how other Microsoft products are affected by year 2000 (Y2K) issues, please see the following Microsoft World Wide Web site:

Before you install this update, you should make sure that you are currently using the versions of the programs listed in the "applies to" section of this article, and that you are not using later versions of the software. If you are not sure, run the program (Word 95, for example), and on the Help menu, click About Microsoft program name (where program name is the program that you are using).

Obtaining and Installing the Update

To obtain the Microsoft Office 95 Year 2000 Update, download it from the following location:

Click Download now! When prompted, click Save this program to disk, and save O95y2k.exe on your Desktop.

To Install the Year 2000 Update on a Single Computer

NOTE: Before installing the Year 2000 Update on your computer, you must quit all Office programs, including the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar. If necessary, you may need to restart your computer in Safe Mode.

Double-click the O95y2k.exe program to run it, and click Next.

Read the "Addendum to the Office 95 License Agreement," click I accept the agreement, and click Next.

Click Update to begin updating your Office files.

When the update is complete, you receive the following message:

Microsoft Office 95 Year 2000 Update has completed successfully.

Your Office files should now be year 2000 compliant.

NOTE: It is not necessary to restart your computer after installing the Year 2000 Update.

During the patching process, a log file is created. The log file can be used to troubleshoot any problems encountered during the patching process. This file is called

95y2k_xx.log

where xx is a two-digit number. The first time the patch is run, the number will be 01 and will increment by 1 every time the patch is applied. The file is located in the following folder:

<drive>:\MSOFFICE

where <drive> is the drive letter where MSOFFICE is installed.

To Install the Year 2000 Update on an Administrative Installation of Office

Before proceeding, make sure that none of the Office files on your server is in use. It may be necessary to install the Year 2000 Update at night or during a scheduled maintenance period. If files are in use, the Year 2000 Update will not be installed properly.

If you are a system administrator, you can install the Microsoft Office Year 2000 Update on a network server that contains an administrative installation of Office. To do this, follow these steps:

On the Start menu, click Run, and in the Open box, type:

C:\Windows\Desktop\O95y2k.exe /c:"Offpatch.exe /a"

Click OK.

In the first box, type the path to the Office files
\\Server\Share\Msoffice
where \\Server\Share\Msoffice is the path to the Office files on the server.

In the second box, type the path to the shared program files
\\Server\Share\Msapps
where \\Server\Share\Msapps is the path to the shared program files on the server.

Click Update.

When your files have been updated, you do not receive a message. Your Office files should now be year 2000 compliant. After you have updated your administrative installation of Office, it may be necessary to do either of the following on each workstation that installed Office from this server:

Run Microsoft Office 95 Setup, and click Reinstall. The Setup program installs the year 2000 compliant files onto your workstation.

Run the Year 2000 Update on the workstation.

NOTE: If any workstation that installed Office from this server is running Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0, you must install the Year 2000 Update on the workstation. If you do not, a file (Msjt3032.dll) will not be properly updated.

To Use the Year 2000 Update When Office Is Running from Compact Disc

It is not possible to install the Year 2000 Update on a computer when Office programs are being run directly from the Office compact disc (CD). If you are running programs from the CD, you can either:

Install Office and then apply the Year 2000 Update.

Upgrade to a later version of Office that includes better year 2000 compliance. For example, upgrade to Microsoft Office 97.

To Use Switches to Install the Year 2000 Update

It is possible to use command-line switches when you run the Year 2000 Update. The following switches are available.


Command Line                  Function

O95y2k.exe /q                 Installs the Year 2000 Update on your
                              computer in quiet mode. You do not receive
                              any alerts while the Update installs.

O95y2k.exe /t:<path>          Temporary files used by the Year 2000
                              Update are extracted into the specified
                              folder. Use this switch if your Temp folder
                              is locked.

O95y2k.exe /c /t:<path>       Temporary files used by the Year 2000
                              Update are extracted into the specified
                              folder, and then the Update stops. This
                              allows you to work with the Update files
                              directly.

O95y2k.exe /c:<command>       Allows you to override the normal operation
                              of the Year 2000 Update. You can use this
                              switch, along with the /a switch, to
                              update an administrative installation of
                              Office.

To extract all of the individual files contained within the Year 2000 Update, type:

O95y2k.exe /c:"Offpatch.exe /x"

History of the Office 95 Year 2000 Update Patch

There have been several releases of this patch. If you downloaded this patch prior to December 1999, you may want to download it again and reinstall it to ensure that you are using the most current version of the patch. The following information documents each release of this patch from the most recent release back to the initial release.

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, please consult your product documentation to complete these steps.

To determine which version of O95y2k.exe you have, follow these steps:

In Windows Explorer, right-click the file.

On the shortcut menu, click Properties, and click the Version tab.

The version number of the file is listed in the File version field:

O95y2k.exe Version 7.0c3 (Released in December 1999)

This release contains updated versions of the Microsoft Schedule+ files Mstre32.dll and Mstrs32.dll. These files were updated to prevent a potential crash that may occur when you synchronize the calendar.

In addition, the English, Korean, and Simplified Chinese versions of Excel.exe were updated to address a programmability problem concerning the exportation of text from Microsoft Excel 95. The version of the updated Excel.exe is 7.0c3.

NOTE: If you are using a different language version of Microsoft Excel 95, you can install version 7.0c3 of the Microsoft Office 95 Year 2000 Update Patch; however, it will not update your copy of Excel.exe. In order to correct the programmability problem mentioned above, you must apply the Excel 9 Programmability Text Export Update, available separately.

O95y2k.exe Version 7.0c2 (Released in July 1999)

This release contains all the fixes included in the previous releases, and it includes the following updated files:

Mscal32.dll
Msspc32.dll
Msscd32.dll

Schedule+

These files were updated to address an issue that might cause Schedule+ 95 to hang (stop responding) if the Microsoft Mail service is used in a mail profile.

The Microsoft Jet file, Msjt3032.dll, was updated to address an issue that might cause Access 95 to crash when using a wizard.

Problems Corrected by the Microsoft Office 95 Year 2000 Update

The following problems are corrected by the Year 2000 Update:

In Word, the update corrects problems associated with entering dates that use only two digits for the year. After the update is installed, dates that use years 00-29 are assumed to be in the range 2000-2029, and dates that use years 30-99 are assumed to be in the range 1930-1999.

Microsoft Word 95 retains and displays custom property information when creating a new document from a user-created template. In addition, documents saved with Read-only recommended can be opened when the TEMP environment variable points to a drive that contains more than 2 GB of free space.

In Access, the update corrects problems associated with entering dates that use only two digits for the year. After the update is installed, dates that use years 00-29 are assumed to be in the range 2000-2029, and dates that use years 30-99 are assumed to be in the range 1930-1999. In addition, the update removes support for the SQL_GUID data type, and the stack size for the program has been increased.

Microsoft Access resolves two-digit years into four-digit years differently, depending on the operating system that you are using. If you are using Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, dates are converted based on the version of Oleaut32.dll that is installed on the computer.

If you are using Access with Microsoft Windows 98, the way dates are resolved into four-digit years depends on the date window that you set on the Date tab of the Regional Settings dialog box.

In PowerPoint, the update corrects problems associated with saving dates into earlier formats. After the update is installed, dates greater than or equal to the year 2038 are correctly saved in the PowerPoint 4.0 format. Also, presentations that contain dates formatted to display two-digit years and are saved in the PowerPoint 4.0 format will display the dates correctly.

In Schedule+, the update corrects problems associated with entering dates that use only two digits for the year. After the update is installed, dates that use years 00-79 are assumed to be in the range 2000-2079, and dates that use years 80-99 are assumed to be in the range 1980-1999.

In Office, the update changes the Find Fast control panel so that dates are displayed using four digits for the year.

Additional Tasks You May Need to Perform

If you have used the Microsoft Access Developer's Toolkit for Windows 95 to redistribute Access run-time files, you need to re-create your Setup programs using the Setup Wizard after you install the Year 2000 Update. This ensures that your custom applications contain the updated files.

If you are using Open Database Connectivity (ODBC) version 2.5 or earlier, you should upgrade your ODBC drivers.

To check your version of ODBC, follow these steps:

Click Start, point to Programs, and click Windows Explorer. Go to the C:\Windows\System folder.

Select the Odbc32.dll file. Right-click the file, and on the shortcut menu, click Properties.

On the Version tab, note the version number.

If the version is 3.0 or later, no additional steps are needed.
If the version is earlier than 3.0, and if you are using Windows NT 3.51, you should upgrade your drivers. For more information see the following Web site:
