The FrontPage Server Extensions are a subset of the functionality of the Office Server Extensions. It is important to know the differences between the two types of tasks each of these Server Extensions perform and how they work together. This article describes when to use the Office Server Extensions, as opposed to using only the FrontPage Server Extensions.

MORE INFORMATION

FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions

The FrontPage Server Extensions (FPSE) provide the following features:
  • Publishing: The FrontPage Server Extensions allow you to publish entire FrontPage Web sites and/or Microsoft Office documents to a FPSE or OSE Extended Web server.

  • Web Site Management: With the FPSE and the FrontPage client application, you can manage your FrontPage Web content remotely. This enables you to keep track of hyperlinks, subwebs, and other content.

  • Administration of Permissions: As a FrontPage Administrator, you can remotely configure permissions and manage users on your FrontPage Webs.

Office 2000 Server Extensions

In addition to ALL of the functionality of the FrontPage Server Extensions, the Office 2000 Server Extensions (OSE) provide Microsoft Office 2000 users with the following basic features:
  • Discussions: With the OSE, you can create threaded discussions in Microsoft Office documents (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, and any HTML files that are stored on an OSE Web server. The discussions themselves are stored on an OSE web server. The documents being discussed can be stored anywhere on the intranet or Internet.

  • Subscriptions and Notifications: The Office 2000 Server Extensions enable users to subscribe to a document or folder. When the subscribed document or folder changes, you receive a notification in e-mail through the OSE Notification Server.

  • Publishing: You can publish Microsoft Office documents (Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint) to OSE Extended Web servers. This functionality is actually provided by the FrontPage Server Extensions (described above).

NOTE: It is important to have the collaboration functionality installed in order to use the features described above.
