Microsoft Office 2000 Server Extensions
IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry.
Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if
a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring
the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help
topic in Regedt32.exe.
SYMPTOMS
When you install the Office 2000 Server Extensions, the Office Setup program prompts you for the name of your SQL Server.
CAUSE
If you have run the Office Setup program before, and stopped it prior to completion, the next time you run the Setup program, it will detect the C:\MSSQL7 folder, where SQL Server or Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) has been previously installed.
RESOLUTION
WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that
may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot
guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor
can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and
Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete
Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in
Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it.
If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency
Repair Disk (ERD).
You must completely remove MSDE from your computer before you reinstall the Office Server Extensions. To remove MSDE completely, perform the following steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click the Services icon in Control Panel.
- Stop the MSSQLServer service.
- Close the Services window.
- Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon in Control Panel.
- Select MSDE from the list and click Add/Remove to uninstall the program.
- Close the Add/Remove Programs window.
- Click Start, point to Programs, and then click Windows NT Explorer.
- Delete the C:\MSSQL7 folder and all of its contents.
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the command line, type "regedit" (without the quotation marks).
- Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft registry key.
- Delete the MSSQLServer registry key, if present.
- Open the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services registry key.
- Delete the MSSQLServer registry key, if present.
- Delete the SQLServerAgent registry key, if present.
- Restart the computer.
- Begin the installation of the Office Server Extensions.
- When prompted to enter a username and password for MSDE to use when connecting to the database, enter SA for the username and leave the password blank.
MORE INFORMATION
The installation of the Office Server Extensions requires that you have SQL Server 6.5 or later installed on your computer. If you do not have SQL Server 6.5 or later, then the Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) is installed in C:\MSSQL7.
If a previous attempt to install the Office Server Extensions is stopped, the next time you attempt to install the Office Server Extensions, the installation program may read the C:\MSSQL7 folder as SQL Server instead of MSDE. This causes the installation program to prompt you for the name of your SQL Server.
