OL2000: (CW) Connection Error Using MCI Internet Mail

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Outlook 2000 or first connect to your MCI Internet Mail server, you may receive the following error message:

Dial-up networking settings not valid. Please check your password.
Following this message, you may notice that sent mail does not leave your Outbox.


RESOLUTION

This behavior may result from incorrect settings in the Internet E-mail service properties. Follow these steps to troubleshoot this behavior:

  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.


  2. Double-click the Mail And Fax icon. NOTE: You may only have a Mail icon if you did not install Fax services. If this is the case, double-click the Mail icon.


  3. If you have more than one profile, click Show Profiles. Click the General tab, click the profile that contains your MCI Internet Mail settings.


  4. Click Properties.


  5. Under the Services tab, you should see the Internet E-mail service. Click Internet E-mail, and then click Properties.


  6. Under the General tab, type a name for your mail account. Then type the account user information including your e-mail address.


  7. Click the Servers tab. Type the following in the Outgoing mail (SMTP) box:
    mailrelay.MCI2000.com


  8. In the Incoming mail (POP3) box type the following, where xx is a number from 01-99 assigned by MCI:
    mailxx.MCI2000.com
    NOTE: If your mail server information is different than listed above, use the server name provided by MCI.


  9. Click Log On Using, and in the Account Name box, type your user e-mail name up to, but not including the @ symbol. In the Password box, type your password.


  10. Click OK twice. Click Close.


Start Outlook and try to send a message.


MORE INFORMATION

The MCI Internet Mail system uses one server for receipt of messages and a second server for sending messages. In the Internet E-mail service profile, the POP3 Server identifies the mail server from which you receive mail. The SMTP server identifies the mail server from which you send mail.
