OL2000: (CW) Connection Error Using MindSpring Internet Mail

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the
Corporate Workgroup/Other option. This option allows you to use Messaging
Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your
installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About
Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate" if you have the Corporate
Workgroup installation.
SYMPTOMS
When you start Microsoft Outlook 2000 or initially connect to your
MindSpring Internet Mail server, you may receive the following error
message:
You could not be logged on to mail server: servername.
Be sure your account information is accurate. If this problem
persists, contact your Internet Service Provider.
Following this message, you may notice that sent mail does not leave your
Outbox.
RESOLUTION
This problem may be caused by incorrect settings in the Internet Mail
service properties. Follow these steps to troubleshoot this problem:
Incorrect Settings Using the Internet E-mail Service
- Click Start, point to Settings, and click
Control Panel.
- Double-click the Mail And Fax icon. You may only have a Mail
icon if you did not install Fax services.
- If you have more than one profile, click Show Profiles and on the
General tab, click the profile that contains your MindSpring Internet
Mail settings.
- Click Properties and on the Services tab, you should see the
Internet E-mail service. If not, click Add to add Internet Mail.
- On the Services tab, click Internet Mail, and then click Properties to
open the Internet Mail Properties.
- Click the Servers tab and in the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) box type,
IN LOWERCASE, mail.mindspring.com or mail.pipeline.com depending on if
you have a MindSpring or Pipeline account).
- In the Incoming Mail (POP3) box type, IN LOWERCASE, pop.mindspring.com
or pop.pipeline.com depending on if you have a MindSpring or Pipeline
account.
NOTE: If your mail server information is different than listed above,
use the server names provided by MindSpring.
- In Account Name, type your e-mail name up to, but not
including the @ symbol, and in Password, type your password.
- Click OK, OK, and Close.
Start Outlook and send a message.

MindSpring's Internet Mail system uses one server for receipt of messages
and a second server for sending messages. In the properties of the Internet
Mail service, the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server box identifies the mail
server through which you send mail. The Incoming Mail (POP) server box
identifies the server from which you receive mail.
