SUMMARY

Microsoft Outlook 2000 uses Microsoft Outlook Express for a newsreader. Installation of this component places a News option on the "Go To" entry of the View menu in Outlook.

Configuring the Outlook Express Newsreader

  1. On the View menu in Outlook, point to Go To and click News.


  2. If you connect to the Internet using a dial-up connection, enter the requested information in the Dial-up Connection dialog box and click Connect.

    If you connect to the Internet using a local area network (LAN) connection, leave this dialog box empty and click Cancel.


  3. On the Outlook Express Tools menu, click Accounts. On the News tab, click Add and then click News.


  4. In the Internet Connection Wizard, type a Display Name for the News account. This name represents your identity in the newsgroups. Click Next.


  5. In E-mail Address, type your e-mail address. Click Next.


  6. In News (NNTP) Server, type the name of the news server supplied to you by your Internet Service Provider (ISP). This is usually in a format similar to "News.domain.net." If your news server requires you to log on, click to select (place a checkmark in) the "My news server requires me to log on" check box. Click Next, click Finish, and click Close.


  7. When asked, "Would you like to download newsgroups from the news account you added?" click Yes. NOTE: If you want to do this later, click No.


  8. In the list of newsgroups, click to select a newsgroup, click Subscribe, and then click OK. This adds the selected newsgroup to the Outlook Express Name window.


  9. Double-click the name of a newsgroup to open it and view its entries.


To Use the Outlook Express Newsreader from Outlook

  1. On the View menu in Outlook, point to Go To and click News. This opens Outlook Express.


  2. In the Folders window, click to select a newsgroup to which you have subscribed. This downloads and display a list the messages in this newsgroup.


  3. Double-click to open and read a message.
