OL2000: (IMO) Troubleshooting MSN E-mail with Outlook

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Internet Mail Only option. To determine your installation type, on the Help menu, click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook, you should see "Internet Mail Only" if you have the Internet Mail Only option installed.

Here are several items to check when troubleshooting Internet e-mail and MSN 2.5 or later. Before attempting any of the following steps, make sure that MSN is working. Double-click the MSN Desktop icon and make sure you can log on and navigate to the MSN On Stage Web site.

Is Secure Password Authentication Enabled?

Check to see if Secure Password Authentication is enabled. If it is not, the result will be an error message that Outlook is unable to log on to the POP3 server (pop3.email.msn.com).

MSN requires Secure Password Authentication enabled. To set or check this option. use the following steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Accounts. On the Mail tab, click to select the mail account, and then click Properties.


  2. On the Servers tab, click to select "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."


  3. Click OK, and then Close, to close all open windows.


  4. Quit Outlook, and then restart Outlook for the settings to take effect.


Is Outlook the Default E-mail Client?

If you click to check your mail at the MSN On Stage site and nothing happens or another e-mail program starts, you may not have Outlook set as your default e-mail program.

To set Outlook as the default e-mail client, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 Desktop icon, and on the shortcut menu click Properties.


  2. On the Programs tab, click to select Microsoft Outlook in the E-mail list.


  3. Click OK to close the window.


Are You Having Problems Sending and Receiving Mail?

To check your account and log on information, follow these steps :
  1. Start Outlook.


  2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.


  3. Under the Mail tab, click to select your MSN account and then click Properties.


  4. Under the General tab make sure your e-mail address is in the format of: <username>@email.msn.com. The reply address is optional, but if you use it and it is different from your e-mail address, you might not receive replies to your messages.


  5. Under the Servers tab, the Incoming mail server should be set to:
    pop3.email.msn.com
    The Outgoing mail server should be set to:
    smtp.email.msn.com
    Click to select "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."


  6. Under the Connection tab, make sure your connection and modem settings are correct. If you connect by modem, click the Dial-up Connection Properties button.


  7. Under the Dial-up Properties General tab, make sure you are using the correct MSN phone number and modem type.


  8. Under the Server Types tab, select "PPP, Internet, Windows NT Server, Windows 98." Enable software compression and TCP/IP should be checked.


  9. Click TCP/IP Settings and confirm that the following are checked "Server assigned IP address," "Server assigned name server address," Use IP header compression," and "Use default gateway or default network."


  10. Click OK three times, and then click Close to close all dialog boxes.


If you can log on to MSN, but can't go the MSN sites or receive e-mail, contact MSN support.
