OL2000: New Mail Notification Disables Next/Previous Button

ID: Q196336

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Outlook, you have the option to display a notification message when mail arrives. If you choose to read a new message by clicking Yes in the notification dialog, the Next Item and Previous Item buttons do not work within the message, and the view Previous and Next menu commands are not available.

CAUSE

This is by design. The message notification feature is not intended to give access to other messages.

RESOLUTION

To open previous or next messages, click No in the notification dialog box or click Close in the Rules Wizard notification dialog box, switch to Outlook, and then open the message from the Inbox. The Next and Previous Item buttons and menu options will work properly.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior is exhibited when a notification message is generated by the Rules Wizard or by the "Display a notification message when new mail arrives" option.

Turn on E-mail Notification

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

  2. On the Preferences tab, click E-mail Options and click to select the "Display a notification message when new mail arrives" check box, and click OK and OK.

  3. Compose a new message and send it to yourself.

  4. When the message arrives in your Inbox, you receive the following notification dialog box:
New mail has arrived. Would you like to read it now?
    <Yes> <No>

  5. Click Yes to read the message.

Results: The message will open. If you click the Next Item or Previous Item buttons (up and down arrows) on the toolbar they are inactive. If you point to either Previous or Next on the View menu, the menu options are not available.

Notification Using Rules Wizard

  1. On the Tools menu, click Rules Wizard, and then click New.

  2. In the "Which kind of rule do you want to create?" list, click to select "Check messages when they arrive" and then click Next.

  3. In the "Which condition(s) do you want to check?" list, do not make a selection and then click Next. You should receive the following warning dialog box:
This rule will be applied to every message you receive. Is this correct?

    <Yes> <No>

    Click Yes.

  4. In the "What do you want to do with the message?" list, click to select "notify me using a specific message."

  5. In the rule description list, click the underlined text, "a specific message."

  6. In the Notification Message dialog box, type your message, click OK, and then Finished.

  7. Compose a new message, and send it to yourself.

  8. When the message arrives in your inbox, you will receive the notification you typed in step 6. You can click Open, to open the e-mail message or Close, to close the notification dialog box without reading the message.

If you click Open to read the message, the Next Item or Previous Item buttons (up and down arrows) on the toolbar are dimmed. If you point to either Previous or Next on the View menu, the menu options are not available.

If you click Close to the notification message and then open the e-mail message from your Inbox, all buttons and menus work as expected.
