OL2000: Office Programs Not Available in Journal

ID: Q196535

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000
  • Microsoft Office 2000

SYMPTOMS

On a multi-user computer, one or more users may not be able to use the Office programs with the Outlook 2000 Journal. When a user clicks Options on the Tools menu, the Office programs do not appear in the "Also record files from" box when you click Journal Options.

CAUSE

The logon profile for the user does not contain registry information for the Office programs installed on the computer. Because this information is not available to the Windows logon profile, the Journal feature in Outlook does not allow you to record files from the Office programs.

RESOLUTION

It is recommended that before reinstalling Office 2000 that you disable user profiles. This way the required information will be written to the default profile and will be included in the users profiles. Windows NT users will need to re-install Office as that logged in user.

To disable user profiles on Windows 95/98, follow these steps:

NOTE: Because there are several versions of Windows, the following steps may be different on your computer. If they are, please consult your product documentation to complete these steps.

  1. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then double-click the Passwords icon.

  2. On the User Profiles tab, click "All users of this computer use the same preferences and desktop settings" (Windows 98) or "All users of this PC use the same preferences and desktop settings" (Windows 95).

  3. Click OK and restart the computer.

To set up the computer so that the Office programs appear in the "Also record files from box" for the user, log on to the computer as the user who is having this problem and run the Office Setup program. This will register the Office programs. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Run.

  2. In the Open box, type:
    <disk>:\setup.exe
where "<disk>:\" is the CD-ROM drive that contains the Office Setup disc.

  3. When the Maintenance Mode screen appears, click Repair Office.

  4. Click "Reinstall Office 2000" and then click Finish.

After the Setup program has finished, the Office programs installed on the computer will be available in the "Also record files from" box when you click Journal Options.
