OL2000: Outlook Express Unintentionally Intercepts Mail

SYMPTOMS

When you open Microsoft Outlook Express to read Newsgroups, it may intercept your e-mail, although Microsoft Outlook is your default Mail Reader.


CAUSE

In Outlook Express, you have set your Mail account for a full Send and Receive.

-and-

You have Outlook Express set as your default news reader.


RESOLUTION

You must remove or disable your Mail account in Outlook Express.

You must set Outlook as your default newsreader.

To Remove Your Mail Account from Outlook Express

  1. Open Outlook Express.


  2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.


  3. On the Mail tab, click to select your mail account.


  4. Click Remove, Yes, and then click Close.


To Disable Your Mail Account in Outlook Express

  1. Open Outlook Express.


  2. On the Tools menu, click Accounts.


  3. On the Mail tab, click to select your mail account, and then click Properties.


  4. On the General tab, click to clear "Include this account when doing a full send and receive."

    -or-

    If you are using an Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) account, on the General tab, click to clear "Check for new messages in subscribed folders."


  5. Click OK and Close.


To Set Outlook as Your Default News Reader

  1. On the Start menu point to Settings, and then Control Panel.


  2. Double-click the Internet icon.


  3. Click the Programs tab.


  4. Click to change the News: option to Microsoft Outlook.
