OL2000: Outlook Starts Slowly with Dial-Up Adapter DNS Enabled

ID: Q197650

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

Outlook starts slowly or appears to stop responding (hang).

CAUSE

A specific combination of network conditions and configurations can cause this behavior. The following will be true in this case:

  • You have configured a Dial-Up Adapter using TCP/IP as a protocol.

  • Domain Name Service (DNS) is enabled on the computer.

  • There is no DNS server available.

RESOLUTION

Follow these steps to disable the DNS setting for the TCP/IP Dial-Up Adapter:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

  2. Double-click the Network icon.

  3. Click to select the TCP/IP Dial-Up Adapter, and then click Properties.

  4. Click the DNS Configuration tab.

  5. Click Disable DNS.

MORE INFORMATION

A situation may exist where one Dial-Up Adapter uses DNS while another does not. If this is the case, you should disable DNS in the Network control panel as mentioned above and enable or disable DNS in the Dial-Up Adapter properties as needed. To individually configure DNS on Dial-up Networking Adapters, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click the Dial-Up connection and click Properties.

  2. Click on the Server Types tab.

  3. Click TCP/IP settings.

  4. From the "Server assigned name server addresses" and "Specify name server addresses" options select the appropriate setting.

  5. Click OK and OK.

If DNS is enabled, you will need to supply server IP addresses in the Primary and Secondary DNS fields.
