OL2000: ErrMsg: "The memory could not be written"

ID: Q198055

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you start Microsoft Outlook, you may receive the following error message:

The instruction at <address> referenced memory at <address>.
The memory could not be written.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when both of the following conditions are true:

  • You record journal entries for at least one Microsoft Office program.

    -and-

  • The Office item log file, Offitems.log, is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:

  1. Rename the Offitems.log file. The Outlook journal logs are normally stored in

    C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

    -or-

    C:\Winnt\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

  2. Restart Outlook and wait at least 30 seconds for the error to appear. If the error does not appear, the problem was isolated.

If the error does occur, rename the Outitems.log file using the steps above.

MORE INFORMATION

The Outlook Journal feature allows you to record the Create, Open, Close and Save events for any file in Office 2000. If renaming the log file allows Outlook to start successfully, the log file will be regenerated; however, any information contained in the original log file will be lost.
