OL2000: (IMO) Addresses in Eudora Nicknames Import Incorrectly

ID: Q206758

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Internet Mail Only option. To determine your installation type, on the Help menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Internet Mail Only" if you have the Internet Mail Only option installed.

SYMPTOMS

After importing items created in Eudora to the Address Book in Microsoft Outlook, recipients defined in Eudora Nicknames may be imported as individual items with strange entries consisting of shifted elements of the e-mail addresses in the Name field of both the Contacts and Address Book.

CAUSE

Eudora uses primarily e-mail addresses in Nicknames, so Outlook uses the e-mail address elements to make a name for the Contact. Names must be manually entered in place of the incorrect names since the Eudora Nicknames use only addresses.

RESOLUTION

Importing Addresses Using the Windows Address Book

An alternate method of converting addresses from the Eudora Nicknames list is to use the import function of the Windows Address Book (WAB). To import using the WAB, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, click Run and then type WAB in the Open box.

  2. On the File menu of the Address Book, click Import and then Address Book.

  3. Click to select "Eudora Pro or Light Address Book (through v3.01)." Click OK.

  4. On the Tools menu, click Options and click to select, "Share contact information among Microsoft Outlook and other applications. Address book data will be stored in the Microsoft Outlook Contact Store." This option ensures that the WAB addresses appear in Contacts.

  5. To use a Group converted from a Eudora Nickname list, open a new mail message and click To. Select the Group or Contact from the list.

MORE INFORMATION

The name entry for the Eudora nickname may be entered in the Full Name and File As fields in the Outlook Contact. For example, if your Nickname for a recipient whose name is John Doe is JohnD and the SMTP address is "someone@microsoft.com", the converted result in the Contact form may show entries in the Full Name and File As fields of "JohnD."

Eudora Nicknames which contain more than one Internet address are converted during the import process as Personal Distribution Lists.
