OL2000: Installing Office 2000 Clears the Option To Use Netscape Messenger as Default MAPI Mail Client

SYMPTOMS

After installing Microsoft Office 2000, Netscape Messenger is no longer your default simple MAPI e-mail client. This problem occurs with several Netscape programs, including Netscape Communicator 4.5 and Netscape Pro.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. Netscape replaces the standard Mapi32.dll file in order to install the Netscape version of simple MAPI support. This version is not compatible with Outlook.

For Outlook to work properly the MAPI file is changed back to the standard version as part of Setup.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 2000.
