OL2000: (IMO) ErrMsg: "OLFSETUP caused a General Protection Fault in module GDI.EXE" Installing Modem

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Internet Mail Only option. To determine your installation type, on the Help menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Internet Mail Only" if you have the Internet Mail Only option installed.

SYMPTOMS

While running the Outlook Symantec Fax Starter Edition Setup to configure your modem, you may receive the following error message:

OLFSETUP caused a general protection fault in module GDI.EXE at 0003:000020b4.


CAUSE

This problem has been reported when using the Matrox MGA Millennium PowerDesk with the following configuration: 


Accelerator:               2064W
Memory:                    4MB
RAMDAC speed:              220MHz
VGA BIOS version:          2.3
Display Driver Version:    4.03.00.3410
VDD Version:               4.03.00.3410
MGA PowerDesk Version:     3.41.012
DirectDraw Driver Version: 4.03.00.3410


RESOLUTION

You may be able to overcome this problem by setting your display to standard VGA and turning off video acceleration during the Outlook fax setup. Upgrading to the latest Matrox drivers should also resolve this problem.

To restart Windows using standard VGA, follow these steps:

  1. Quit all programs, click Start, and then click Shutdown.


  2. Click Shutdown, and then click OK.


  3. Restart the computer, press F8 when you see the starting Windows message, and then choose Safe Mode. This will start your computer using standard VGA.


To turn off video acceleration, follow these steps:
  1. On the Windows Desktop, right-click My Computer and then click Properties.


  2. On the Performance tab, click Graphics.


  3. Drag the Hardware Acceleration slider to None.


  4. Click OK and OK to accept the changes and exit.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 2000.
