ID: Q212964

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

If you synchronize offline folder settings in Microsoft Outlook you may receive the following error message:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

DETAILS:
Outlook caused an invalid page fault in module OUTLLIB.DLL at <address>.

CAUSE

The offline folder file (.ost) is located on another computer and is not shared or is not available. When you click OK to the above error message, Outlook quits. If you then restart Outlook it appears to run properly; however, without warning Outlook now uses a local offline folder at: C:\Windows\Local Settings\Application Data\ Microsoft\Outlook.ost.

RESOLUTION

Store your .ost on your local computer or be sure the .ost located on the other computer is available before you synchronize offline folder settings.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
