OL2000: Outlook Does not Shut Down Properly when You Attempt to Quit or Restart Windows NT

SYMPTOMS
If you attempt to shut down Windows NT 4.0 while Outlook is running you may receive the following informational message:
Please close all Outlook windows before shutting down the system.
The first message may be followed by this error message if the Office Assistant has not had time to start:
AGENTSVR.EXE - DLL initialization failed.
The application failed to initialize because the window station is shutting down.
After a brief pause, the following message appears:
This Windows application can not respond to the End Task request. It may be busy, waiting for a response from you, or it may have stopped executing.
Press Cancel to cancel and return to Windows NT.
Press End Task to close this application immediately. You will loose any unsaved information in this application.
Press Wait to give the application 20 seconds to finish what it is doing, and then try to close the application again.
CAUSE
You attempted to exit Windows NT under the following circumstances:
- Outlook is running.
- You have selected Word as your e-mail editor and have a Word e-mail message window open.
- The default Office Assistant (paper clip) is running or attempting to start.
RESOLUTION
Follow these steps to exit Windows NT:
- Click Cancel to close the Task Manager dialog box.
- Click OK to close any error or informational messages.
- Close all Outlook message windows and quit Outlook.
- Press CTL+ALT+DEL, and click Task Manager.
- On the Applications tab make sure no programs are listed as Not Responding. If any are listed, end those tasks by clicking End Task.
- On the Processes tab make sure Outlook.exe is not listed. If listed, end the Outlook.exe task by clicking End Process.
You should now be able to exit or restart Windows NT.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 2000 when running on Windows NT 4.0. This problem does not occur on Windows 98.
