OL2000: Contact Created In Address Book Does not Keep Plain Text Setting in Contacts Folder

ID: Q213010

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Internet Mail Only option. To determine your installation type, on the Help menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Internet Mail Only" if you have the Internet Mail Only option installed.

SYMPTOMS

You create a Contact using the Address Book and do not select "Send E-mail using plain text." When you view the same Contact in the Contacts folder, "Send E-Mail using plain text only" is selected. However, when you create a new e-mail message to this Contact, if your default mail format is either Rich Text or HTML format, the default format is used instead of Plain Text.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When creating a contact, the "Send E-Mail using plain text only" setting is Off by default in the Address Book, but is On by default in the contact in the Contacts module. When you send e-mail to the contact, the setting in the Address Book is the setting that is used rather than the setting in the Contacts module. If the contact is created in the Contacts module, the setting is then propagated to the entry in the Address Book.

If you create a contact in the Address Book or import a contact from Microsoft Outlook Express 5.0, and open it using the Outlook Contact Inspector, "Send E-Mail using plain text only" is selected. If you clear "Send E-Mail using plain text only" in Outlook, save the item, and later click to select it again in Outlook, the contact still retains the non-plain text format when sending a message.

To send a message in Plain Text, you must reset the option to "Send E-Mail using plain text only" in the Address Book, or in Outlook Express and send the message from there.
