OL2000: (CW) cc:Mail Imported Bulletin Boards Lost After Upgrading to Outlook 2000

NOTE: These procedures only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. This option allows you to use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, on the Help Menu click About Microsoft Outlook. In About Microsoft Outlook you should see "Corporate or Workgroup" if you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation.

SYMPTOMS

While using Outlook to attach to a cc:Mail post office, you attempt to import bulletin information from post office bulletin boards. The resulting list of available bulletin boards is blank. This operation was successful in Outlook 98.


CAUSE

Due to changes in the cc:Mail transport used by Outlook, the name and location of the stored bulletin boards has changed.

This behavior has been observed to occur in the following scenarios:

  • After upgrading to Outlook 2000 on a Windows 95 or Windows 98 computer configured to use the cc:Mail transport.


  • After installing Outlook 2000 using the cc:Mail transport on a Windows NT Workstation or Server system and then upgrading to Windows 2000.



RESOLUTION

To correct the stored file location if a long list of bulletin board imports has been done in a previous version of Outlook, rename the file, Cwimport.ini to Bbnames.txt, and then set the path to the file in the Windows Registry.

Alternately, if you have a small list of bulletin boards, you may type the name of the bulletin boards to be imported.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Outlook 2000.

Steps to Set the Registry Path to the Stored Bulletin Boards

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To rename the bulletin board stored file name, follow these steps:
  1. Click the Start button, click Find and then Files and Folders. In the Named box type Cwimport.ini and then click Find Now. The default location for this file is C:\Windows.


  2. Right-click the file and rename it to Bbnames.txt.


To set the location of the Bbnames.txt file in the Windows Registry, follow these steps:
  1. Click the Start button and then click Run. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.


  2. In the left pane of the Registry Editor navigate to and click to select the following key:


    3. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook\ccmail\ccm_program_data
  3. Right-click the ccmail_program_data key and then click Modify. Type the path for the newly created Bbnames.txt file you created with the renaming process.


  4. Click OK and then on the Registry menu, click Exit.


In some instances, the registry key refered to in step 3 above may not exist. In such cases, it is necessary to create the key. To create the key in the registry, follow these steps:
  1. Click the Start button and then click Run. In the Open box, type regedit and then click OK.


  2. In the left pane of the Registry Editor navigate to and click to select the following key:


    3. HKEY_CURENT_USER/Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0\Outlook
  3. On the Edit menu, click New and then click String Value.


  4. In the selected value label box, type ccm_program_data and then double-click the key.


  5. In the Value Data box, type the path to the Bbnames.txt file and then click OK.


  6. Click OK and then on the Registry menu, click Exit.


Start Outlook and then attempt to Import the cc:Mail bulletin boards.

Steps to Manually Import the Bulletin Boards

To manually add the bulletin boards, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click cc:Mail Service Tools and then click Import cc:Mail Bulletin Boards.


  2. In Import cc:Mail Bulletin Boards, click Edit List.


  3. In Edit Bulletin Board List, click Add.


  4. In Bulletin Board Add Name, type the bulletin board name in "Enter Bulletin Board name to add to list of selectable Bulletin Boards." Click OK


  5. Click the bulletin board name added in the previous step and then click OK. If multple bulletin boards are to be imported, click the names while pressing the SHIFT key.


  6. Click Begin to import the bulletin boards.


NOTE: You can copy the file to any valid folder you choose, however that path must be specified in the above registry location.
